Calligraphy —a dance of the pen or brush. Thicks and thins, negative space delineated by positive line—the yin and yang of life itself.
I was fortunate to have one of the world's great teachers, Lloyd Reynolds, as a mentor and friend, beginning with graphic arts studies at Reed College and continuing for years. Lloyd taught us to revere the written word in all its variations of times and cultures as well as opening our minds to profound wisdom teachings of the past.
Since then, calligraphy has been the thread on which the individual beads of my photography, painting, writing, teaching, even thought, have been strung.
Skilled in half a dozen alphabets from differing historical eras, I am, after long practice and learning patience, able to write words that, in their innate form, imply the meaning behind the words themselves. Meaning and form unified visually.
